Sexually transmitted diseases are asymptomatic in 70% of cases, so you may pass the disease without knowing about it or vice versa, be infected due to your partner’s ignorance.
The most common sexually transmitted diseases are chlamydia, gonorrhoea, syphilis, genital herpes, trichomoniasis, mycoplasmosis, HIV and papillomavirus. Some of the strains of papillomavirus cause genital warts, while others cause changes in the cervix that, if left untreated, can lead to the development of cervical cancer. Hepatitis B and C can also be transmitted through sexual contact.
Sexually transmitted diseases are spread during unprotected intercourse and some through blood or skin contact, as well as from mother to child during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Most sexually transmitted diseases are treatable, others manageable with medication. Untreated sexually transmitted diseases can cause major health issues.
