HEAVY MENSTRUAL BLEEDING (MENORRHAGIA)

GYNAECOLOGIST appointment, Heavy menstrual bleeding

Heavy menstrual bleeding or menorrhagia is characterized by blood loss of more than 80 ml during menstruation.

The causes could be:

  • Uterine causes such as thickening of the lining of the uterus, uterine myomas, inflammation, copper IUDs or malignant tumours of the uterus
  • Systematic reasons such as hypothyroidism, female hormone dysfunction, uncorrected diabetes or obesity
  • Medication: aspirin, warfarin, valproate

If a patient suffers from heavy menstrual bleeding, we at Valvekliinik perform a gynaecological examination, vaginal ultrasound to assess the uterus and ovaries, and blood tests, if needed. We prescribe treatment depending on the cause.
